My Experience with the 13-inch M5 iPad Pro 

Upgrading from the 11-inch M3 iPad Pro to the new 13-inch M5 model was an exciting leap in screen real estate. However, the upgrade came with a practical hurdle: I needed a new Magic Keyboard. I’ve long been a fan of the Magic Keyboard experience, but I’ll admit, the full retail price is a tough pill to swallow. 

Determined to find a better deal, I turned to the Best Buy Open Box section. I found a unit listed in “Good” condition at a local store that matched my iPad’s color. I’ll be honest, I was apprehensive. We’ve all seen open-box items that look like they’ve been through a war zone. I crossed my fingers, hit “Buy,” and hoped for the best. 

The Open-Box Reality Check 

When I arrived at the store, I asked the associate if I could inspect the keyboard before finalizing the purchase. To their credit, they were happy to open the box for me. 

To my surprise, the keyboard was tucked safely in its original Apple packaging, which, while slightly worn, was fully intact and even included the original product information packet. Upon inspection, I realized the “Good” rating was incredibly conservative. Aside from a small, dark patch on the underside of the keyboard, the device was flawless. Since that patch is only visible when the unit is folded and stowed in my messenger bag, it is a non-issue for me. Honestly, I would have classified this unit as “Excellent” condition. 

The Experience: Why the Magic Keyboard Still Reigns Supreme 

After spending time with the setup, it’s clear why I keep coming back to this accessory. The Magic Keyboard is a masterclass in functional design: 

• Premium Typing: The key travel is satisfying and quiet, striking that perfect balance between tactile feedback and professional discretion. 
• The Trackpad: It offers that classic, responsive Apple trackpad experience—precise and intuitive for navigating iPadOS. 
• Form & Function: The floating cantilever design is as brilliant as ever, offering smooth adjustability for the perfect viewing angle. The 14-key function row is a massive quality-of-life improvement, making volume and screen brightness adjustments seamless. 
• Protection: It provides front-and-back coverage without adding unnecessary bulk, which is perfect for my morning commutes and hikes. 
• Thoughtful Design: It doesn’t interfere with Apple Pencil attachment, and while the black finish is a slight magnet for fingerprints, a quick pass with a microfiber cloth keeps it looking brand new. 

A Minor Compatibility Note 

If there is one downside, it isn’t with Apple’s hardware, but rather with third-party accessories. I am a long-time fan of dbrand’s leather skins, but unfortunately, the skin is just a hair too thick to allow the iPad to make a secure, reliable connection with the Magic Keyboard pins. It’s a minor disappointment for those of us who love to customize our gear, but it’s a trade-off I’m willing to make for the keyboard’s utility. 

Final Verdict 

If you are on the fence about picking up an open-box accessory, my advice is to take the leap, especially if you can inspect it in-store first. My experience proved that you can snag a high-quality, premium Apple product at a significant discount if you’re willing to look past a little wear on the packaging. 

This purchase was a win across the board: I got the functionality I need, the protection I wanted, and the peace of mind that comes with a great deal.
