Pothole Pizza Sausage Palooza: A Kwik Trip Quest for Frozen Pizza Gold

(Posted on: April 23rd, 2025)

Hey everyone, and welcome back to the blog!

You know, living in Wisconsin, a stop at Kwik Trip is practically a weekly ritual for many of us. Whether it’s for gas, coffee, or those surprisingly tempting Glazers, it’s a convenient staple. On a recent visit, while browsing the frozen section, my eyes landed on something called “Pothole Pizza”. The name alone is intriguing, right? Specifically, the “Sausage Palooza” variety called out to me.

The Promise: What Caught My Eye

The packaging boasted some pretty compelling claims: “Jumbo sausage,” “Real Wisconsin cheese,” and a “crispy thin crust”. Honestly, that sounds like the trifecta for a potentially great pizza experience, especially from the freezer aisle. Peeking through the plastic, it looked promising – generously covered with cheese and dotted with substantial chunks of sausage. Could this be the hidden gem I’ve been searching for in the world of frozen pizza? Hope sprang eternal!

From Glass Door Freezer to Oven

Like most frozen pizzas, the prep was straightforward. Preheat the oven (following package directions, of course!), remove the packaging, and slide it onto the rack. The box suggested around 22 minutes, and sure enough, right on time, I pulled out a pizza that looked the part – crispy edges, golden-brown cheese, bubbling away nicely. The aroma filled the kitchen. That crucial question echoed in my mind: Could this finally be “The One“?

The Taste Test: Breaking it Down

Alright, let’s get into the nitty-gritty – the eating experience.

  • The Crust: The promise of “crispy thin crust” was delivered… partially. It was definitely cracker-thin and achieved a good crispness in the oven. However, flavor-wise, it was disappointingly neutral. It felt more like a functional platform, a crispy conveyance system for the toppings, rather than contributing any real taste of its own. Pretty typical for many thin-crust frozen options, unfortunately.
  • The Sausage: Here’s where things looked up! The “jumbo sausage” chunks were indeed noticeable and, more importantly, tasty. They had a pleasant, mildly sweet Italian sausage flavor profile. Crucially, they didn’t taste overly processed and retained a nice, satisfying chew. A definite highlight.
  • The Cheese: Billing itself with “Real Wisconsin Cheese” sets a certain expectation here in the Dairy State! It was plentiful, melting into that familiar cheesy blanket you expect on a frozen pizza. The flavor was good – savory and satisfying. No complaints on the cheese front.
  • The Sauce: And here’s where things took a dip again. The tomato sauce was surprisingly bland. It tasted watered-down and lacked any real seasoning – no herbaceous notes, no tang, no depth. It was just… there, adding moisture but contributing virtually nothing to the overall flavor profile. A real missed opportunity.

The Final Verdict: Is It Worth Navigating This Pothole?

So, after tasting all the components, what’s the final word on Pothole Pizza’s Sausage Palooza?

Honestly, it lands firmly in the “typical frozen pizza” category. The sausage and cheese are definite positives – tasty and generous. However, the flavorless crust and the incredibly bland sauce really pull the overall experience down.

Considering the price point of $9.99, I feel there are other frozen pizzas available (some I’ve reviewed previously!) that offer a more complete and satisfying “real pizza” flavor experience.

For its commendable sausage and cheese, I’d give the Pothole Pizza – Sausage Palooza a 2 out of 5 stars. ★★☆☆☆

The search for the ultimate frozen pizza continues!
